Hannah Waldron tapestry weaving and Disobedient Bodies at The Hepworth Wakefield
Since visiting Dovecot Studios and Tisser La Couleur exhibition I’ve wanted to gain a better understanding of tapestry weaving. When a weekend class came up at The Hepworth in Wakefield it was the perfect opportunity. I’m also a fan of Hannah Waldron’s work and how she turns illustration into weaving.
Hannah gave an introduction to weaving, brought some of her own wonderful work for us to take a close look at and provided us each with a mini Trav’Loom. We worked on a sampler to understand some basic techniques and patterns and then took inspiration from the current exhibition to design and create our own work.
The exhibition ‘Disobedient Bodies’ sees fashion designer JW Anderson explore the human form in art, fashion and design. Anderson makes a personal selection of items from the collection and puts them alongside notable fashion pieces. With multiple rooms made from ceiling to floor fabric the exhibition was elegant but also fun and charming.
It was a joy to spend the weekend at The Hepworth. The class was the perfect introduction to weaving and spending each lunchtime revisiting exhibition gave me hours of inspiration.
