New Stalingrad LP

Twenty-five years ago, I was part of a hardcore punk band called Stalingrad. We released records and played shows across Europe before going our separate ways. For a long time, this was just a chapter in my past that I didn’t really talk about or reconnect with my old bandmates over.

Two years ago, I met Steve Kirby from Industrial Coast cassette label. He was keen on re-releasing some limited-run experimental cassette demos that we had created, which showcased a more electronic sound. He successfully sold the reissued tapes.

This sparked the idea of creating an LP of new material. I was fascinated by the concept of nostalgia, how music serves as a conduit to the past, and why musicians are drawn to the idea of “getting the band back together”. I contacted the former members of Stalingrad and other people involved in making our first LP released 25 years ago.

These conversations led to discussions about the past and highlighted the fallibility of our memories. I found it intriguing to explore this alongside the theme of nostalgia. As a result, we decided to produce soimething that documented the experience of Stalingrad and that of our peers living in Bradford during the 1990s. This involved collaborating with various musicians from that period as well as engaging with musicians from the current DIY scenes who were not familiar with Stalingrad.

After a year and a half of work and collaboration with 19 other musicians, we completed the project, and it was released on vinyl by Industrial Coast.
