Zoz book by Norman Mommens
On a recent visit to Ken Spelman I found this book ‘Zoz – A Story of Glory’ written and illustrated by Norman Mommens. The book is an edition of 200, printed and bound by the Lion and Unicorn Press at the Royal College of Art, London in 1959.
I’d never heard of Norman Mommens before, a little online research told me he was born in Belgium in 1922 but lived in England for many years with his wife, the writer, Patience Gray, he died in Italy in 2000. He sounds like a man of many interests and talents, not only an illustrator but also a sculptor, painter, illustrator, farmer and philosopher.
The full colour litho printed pictures of trophies first caught my eye but then I noticed the more simple illustrations made with so few lines but brimming with character. Zoz is a quirky story of motorbikes, glory, family, trophies and the opposite sex illustrated to perfection.
