Little Sparta
Little Sparta is the garden of artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay and his wife Sue Finlay. Set in the Pentland Hills, the garden was established in 1966 and Finlay lived there until his death in 2006. He chose the name “Little Sparta” in response to nearby Edinburgh’s nickname, the “Athens of the North”. The garden includes over 270 artworks in various mediums with themes including nature, classical antiquity, the French Revolution and the Second World War. The sculptural poems live in perfect harmony with the garden and moorland, some dominating their surroundings and others hiding around corners waiting to be discovered.
