A64 Red Bus Cafe, Leeds

For as long as I can remember the Red Bus Cafe has marked the journey from Leeds to York on the A64. It was time to make this cafe a destination rather than passing it by again. The visit combined classic quintessential British traditions that are sadly on the decline.. the double decker bus and the traditional British independent roadside cafe.

The bus began life in service in Newcastle in 1968 in the 80s it was withdrawn from service and ends up on the A64 about 10 miles east of Leeds. In 2008 the cafe was nearly lost due to a legal wrangle with Leeds City Council but survives to serve another grateful passerby.

On arrival we grabbed a cup of tea and headed straight upstairs for the novelty of sitting on the top deck of the bus. I had vaguely hoped the bus seats would still exist, but alas they were long gone. Two burly builders sat up there too looking just as excited at the novelty of it all. The sun and heat from the kitchen made us retreat outdoors – an unexpected lovely quiet shaded green area. The service was friendly, food tasty and surroundings couldn’t be better. Long live the Red Bus Cafe.
