The 1 in 12 Club

The 1 in 12 Club was founded in 1981 by the Claimants Union to provide affordable and free social spaces for working-class people receiving unemployment benefits. Its name was a response to a claim made by the Conservative government that one in twelve people were fraudulently claiming benefits—a statistic widely regarded as fabricated. Today, the club is collectively owned and run by its members, operating according to anarchist principles.

As part of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, the 1 in 12 Club began collecting archive material and recording interviews documenting more than 40 years of the club’s history. They approached us to design and build a website that would house this growing archive and serve as its primary digital home.

With our passion for music, culture, and thoughtfully curated collections, it was a project we were excited to take on. As the club no longer had an active website, we created a comprehensive platform that not only showcases the archive but also provides information on membership, a what’s on guide, and dedicated pages for each of the club’s collectives.
