Ilirska Bistrica Memorial, Slovenia
On a road trip to the Croatian coast I hoped to see lots of Spomenik, I managed a few, Ilirska Bistrica being the most interesting. Spomenik are memorials built between 1960s-1980s during Tito’s Republic of Yugoslavia, to honor the events of the National Liberation War or World War Two. Their design is modernist, often built in concrete, meant as symbols of a New Tomorrow.
Ilirska Bistrica Memorial was designed by Janez Lenassi and built in 1965. It is dedicated to the fighters of the 4th Yugoslavian Army who liberated the area during World War Two.
Thanks to the Spomenik Database for their informative and fascinating website.
